Shine On Little Star Brother
Once upon a time many years ago, way up in the heavens there lived seven sisters and one little brother. The seven sisters were stars that shone brightly in the night sky. Each sister had a mission and a reason to shine. They were big and did important work. Little Star Brother was so small he hardly ever got noticed. He felt as if he had no mission, no reason to live.
So he asked the Earth Mother for permission to come visit the Earth to see if he could find his purpose. Earth Mother agreed under the condition that Little Star Brother stay at a respectful distance and not involve himself in the goings on of the Earth. He was just to observe.
Little Star Brother agreed and spent several days hovering above the blue planet, learning from the plants and animals. Then one fine day he met Coyote. Coyote made Little Star Brother laugh as he romped around the meadows and forests below. Then one day Coyote noticed that he was being watched and he spoke to Little Star Brother.
"Who spies on Coyote," growled the furry four-legged.
Startled, Little Star Brother spoke in a shaky voice, "It is me, Little Star Brother."
"Star Brother, hugh? Well, why don't you come closer so I can see you better," asked Coyote.
Little Star brother replied, "Oh, no I can not. The Earth Mother made me promise not to go to close."
"But you are so far away. I can not see you with my little eyes. Just come a little closer."
Little Star Brother decided that a little closer could not hurt so he moved forward just a bit. A few days passed and before he knew it, Little Star Brother had moved so close that he could feel the wind as Coyote ran by on his important mission. Little Star Brother had not even noticed how close he got until one day Coyote stopped in his tracks and said, "I have been very unlucky in my hunting. I am very hungry." And quick as a flash Coyotes giant jaws clamped down on Little Star Brother and Little Star Brother found himself trapped in the belly of Coyote.
"HELP!" yelled Little Star Brother. He raised his voice and cried. Eventually the Seven Sisters began to miss their little brother. They asked Earth Mother to return him. Earth Mother was very displeased to learn that Little Star Brother had disobeyed her and gotten mixed up with the rascally Coyote. Earth Mother said that there was nothing she could do.
But the Seven Sisters would not give up. They asked their allies, the Thunder Beings, to help. Quickly they put together a plan to save Little Star Brother.
The Thunder Beings spoke to Little Star Brother and told him to puff himself up. He must over come his fear of the dark and use all his strength to generate heat and personal power. The Thunder Beings cheered on Little Star Brother by producing loud claps of thunder and lightening bolts to scare Coyote. Coyote began to sputter and coughed. As Little Star Brother got bigger and bigger Coyote felt worse and worse. And finally Coyote spit Little Star Brother on the ground. As Coyote ran away, the Thunder Beings chased him and threw thunder bolts at his feet.
Earth Mother spoke to Little Star Brother. "What will you do now?" she asked.
"I would like to go home," sobbed Little Star Brother.
"That is impossible. You have broken your promise and violated our agreement. You must stay here, on Earth. But you can not stay a star. You must take on the form of an Earth Being. I will let you choose the form you like best."
Little Star Brother thought a moment and said, " I would like to be a flying bug and live in the air like my sisters. Also, I want to shine brightly, like the little star that I am."
And that is how the firefly came into being.
Little Star Brother is my inspiration. I have no desire to live in the belly of darkness.
